The third Estonian-Swedish Song- and Dance Festival The third Estonian-Swedish Song- and Dance Festival

Choirs, dancers and musicians from Estonia, Sweden and the Swedish speaking areas in Finland filled up the stage in the Courtyard of the Bishop Castle in Haapsalu as the Estonian-Swedish Song- and Dance Festival took place, Saturday 2 July.

This was the third Estonian-Swedish Song- and Dance Festival ever being arranged. The first Festival took place in 1933, and 80 years later, in 2013, the second Festival was arranged.

All Festivals have taken place at the Courtyard of the Bishop Castle in Haapsalu; the very same castle that inspired Ilon Wikland to her illustrations of Mattisborgen (Matt’s Fort) in Astrid Lindgren’s book Ronja Rövardotter (Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter). Ilon Wikland was raised in Haapsalu and, like so many other Estonians and Estonian-Swedes, she managed to escape to Sweden in the autumn of 1944.

With this as a background, it wasn’t a coincidence that the special Festival Picnic, jointly arranged by the Swedish Embassy and SCCE, took place at Iloni Imedemaa (Ilon's Wonderland), very close to the Lossiplats entrance to the Festival Grounds.

It was indeed a beautiful Festival Saturday and I was happy to see and meet so many SCCE members among the performers and in the big audience!

On behalf of the SCCE, I would like to thank the Swedish Embassy for a very good cooperation in arranging our joint picnic. My thanks also go to our members Catering Services, Västerbottensost, Semu, Oriflame and Lindvall’s Coffee for their support in filling up our picnic buffet with Swedish and Estonian summer delicacies.

Sincerely,

Kristiina Sikk

SCCE Ombudsman
