SCCE and focus went to Viljandi SCCE and focus went to Viljandi

- In terms of growth, Viljandi is now on third place from top in Estonia. Not too many years ago, we where number three from the bottom, said Ando Kiviberg, the Mayor of Viljandi, as he welcomed SCCE and SCCE’s magazine focus to Viljandi’s Town Hall.

‘Viljandi is born to be creative’, says the town’s slogan and our full day program included a number of visits to both businesses and the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy.

Our first company visit was to Cleveron who started their business as an online furniture retailer in 2006. They saw a clear need for an efficient click-and-collect parcel delivery solution and in 2007, Cleveron took upon the development of hardware and software for automated parcel terminals. Today, Cleveron is a fast growing technology company and has developed to the innovation leader in the sector of robotics based parcel terminals.

Calculated on a 75 years life expectancy, we spend 26 years sleeping, according to an OECD research. Realizing this, Bed Factory Sweden was our next company visit. The company was founded in 1993 and manufactures high quality beds to global bed brands, retail chains and hotels. Today, the company produces around 25.000 beds per year in their new and modern factory in Viljandi.

UT Viljandi Culture Academy is one of the four colleges of the University of Tartu and has offered specialized culture education since 1952. After reconstruction of the Estonian higher education system at the beginning of new millennium, the Academy joined the University of Tartu in 2005. UT Viljandi Culture Academy sees sustaining and developing the values of Estonian traditional culture as its most important task, and we got the opportunity to visit their department for Estonian native crafts (textile, metal, construction and inherited crafts).

- Describing Viljandi based industries in a general way, you can say that it is to a larger extent about high-tech, beds, doors, windows and products for the agricultural sector, summarized Kaarel Lehtsalu, Board Member and Consultant at Viljandi County Development Centre.

A full report from our Viljandi visit will follow in the summer issue of focus.

On behalf of the SCCE, I would like to thank Ando Kiviberg and Kai Oja for setting up a very interesting program for us. My sincere thanks also go to Cleveron, Bed Factory Sweden, UT Viljandi Culture Academy, and Viljandi County Development Centre for receiving us.

Sincerely,

Kristiina Sikk

SCCE Ombudsman
