Tree Planting Tree Planting

Last Thursday 11 May, SCCE, as one of the partners in the annual Swedish Business Awards in Estonia, joined Business Sweden, Embassy of Sweden, Volvo Trucks Estonia and several other SCCE members for a tree planting afternoon in Kose-Riste, some 40 km south of Tallinn.

- Swedish Business Awards in Estonia is aiming to become a sustainable event also from an environmental impact perspective. Thus we are planting trees in order to compensate for carbon dioxide CO2 emissions caused by the main Awards Ceremony, says Janar Sutt, Business Sweden’s Country Manager in Estonia.

Supported by nice, however cold, spring weather, we teamed up in pairs and got equipped with shovels and buckets containing fresh pine tree plants. Our work resulted in close to 700 pine trees planted.

We ended our planting session with well deserved grilled sausages and coffee provided by Coffee People, one of last year’s Swedish Business Awards winners.

- To be even more environmentally friendly, we organized a joint bus transport with a Volvo Hybrid Bus from Tallinn to the planting site and back to Tallinn again, adds Janar Sutt.

At the end of April, 20 new Volvo Hybrid Buses arrived to TLT (Tallinna Linnatranspordi AS), the city’s public transportation company. With that delivery, TLT now has 44 Volvo Hybrid Buses in their fleet.

Hybrid means that these buses operate with a parallel transmission line, where diesel and electric engines can operate independently of each other. The diesel engine complies with the EU's latest Euro 6 emissions standards, and the batteries for the electric engines are charged by the bus’s own braking energy.

The outcome is less fuel consumption and less emission, both factors contributing to a better environment and lower operational costs.

The tree planting was indeed a great initiative and I thank Business Sweden and all participants for a very nice afternoon together.

Sincerely,

Kristiina Sikk

SCCE Ombudsman
