The first University of Tartu Scholars in Swedish language awarded The first University of Tartu Scholars in Swedish language awarded

Marite Sild and Mari-Liis Korkus became the first two scholars being awarded the scholarship to Bachelor students, majoring in Swedish language and literature at the University of Tartu. The scholarships are worth € 500 each and are financed by the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Estonia and the Embassy of Sweden.

The scholarships were introduced this spring and are intended as a motivation and support for students demonstrating outstanding academic achievements, as well as active use of the skills and knowledge acquired in Swedish philology in professional life and society.

- In order for business relations to be successful, we need mediators, who know the business climate and traditions in both Estonia and Sweden. In addition to experts skilled in economics and business in general, we also need people who are experts in the language and culture, said Kersti Lepajõe, the University’s Director of the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures, as the scholarships were handed out in Tartu, Friday 29 September.

Among the participants at the scholarship ceremony in the University’s Library of World Languages and Cultures were Daniel Sävborg - Professor of Scandinavian Studies, Kersti Lepajõe - Director of the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures, Liina Kümnik – Embassy of Sweden, SCCE’s Kristiina Sikk and Kaire Papp, Kristina Mullamaa - Head of Skandinavistika, the University’s Department of Scandinavian Studies, and Madis Kanarbik - Sweden’s Honorary Consul in Tartu.

In addition to the scholarships, SCCE also handed out a coffee mug from Hemtex and a package of Lindvall’s Kaffe to the scholars. The latter a very symbolic gift, as Lindvall’s coffee is made in Uppsala, the site of the University of Uppsala since 1477, 155 years before the University of Tartu was founded as Academia Gustaviana by the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf in 1632.

On behalf of the SCCE, I join the University of Tartu and the Embassy of Sweden in wishing Marite Sild and Mari-Liis Korkus all the best for their future careers.

Sincerely,

Kristiina Sikk

SCCE Ombudsman
