Celebrating Finland’s 100th Anniversary Celebrating Finland’s 100th Anniversary

Friday evening 24 November, SCCE went to Tallinn’s old cinematheque Kinomaja to be part of celebrating Sweden’s and Estonia’s neighbor Finland’s 100th Anniversary.

Our program this evening was a collaboration between the Embassy of Finland, the Finnish institute in Estonia, FECC, PÖFF, Midnight Sun Film Festival and SCCE, and included screening of Jörn Donner’s legendary 1971 documentary Perkele! Kuvia Suomesta/Fuck Off! Images of Finland.

Jörn Donner’s documentary was filmed in both Finland and Sweden, and it is a cross-section of the Finnish society where beauty and ugliness, sad and funny, gentle and obscene co-exist organically. It is worth to mention that the uncut version only received screening permission at the end of the 1980’s.

Jörn Donner has for long periods lived and worked in Sweden. As managing director of the Swedish Film Institute 1978 – 1982, he was one of the producers of Ingmar Bergman's film Fanny and Alexander.

Following the movie, Jörn Donner received PÖFF’s Lifetime Achievement Award and delivered a memorable and hilarious acceptance speech at the award ceremony.

On behalf of the SCCE, I congratulate Finland to the 6 December 100th Anniversary. Of course my congratulations also go to Jörn Donner and his well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sincerely,

Kristiina Sikk, SCCE Ombudsman
