Here we are. What’s next?

It became an interesting and intensive day in Pärnu as the Swedish Chambers of Commerce in Estonia and Latvia carried through the jointly organized Nordic - Baltic conference on the economic environment.

As Scandic Rannahotell saw its biggest conference hall filled up with participants from Estonia, Latvia and Sweden, the Pärnu May weather outside didn't exactly stressed the city's title as Estonia's Summer Capital this day.

Following Anders Hedman's and Gunnar Ljungdahl's - Chairmen of the Swedish Chambers of Commerce in Estonia and Latvia - welcome addresses, Mikael Orkomies, Partner at Excedea and our conference moderator, kicked off the Here we are. What's next? conference.

- We are in the fourth phase of the crisis right now, said Daniel Bergvall, Economist at SEB Research in Stockholm and the first speaker of the day. We can see a growth momentum, but we can also see differences in underlying conditions now being exposed.

- It's a jungle out there, said Karolina Ullman - MAQS Law Firm Tallinn, and Aleksandrs Kazachkovs - MAQS Law Firm Riga, as they focused on differences in Estonian and Latvian law and business culture in their joint presentation.

- There are around 12.000 Chambers of Commerce around the world, said Carl-Johan Jargenius, representing the Association of Swedish Chambers of Commerce and Industry. This global network includes 11 Swedish Chambers of Commerce in Sweden and another 60 Swedish Chambers of Commerce abroad.

- There are of course reasons both for and against investing in the Baltics, said Mikael Orkomies, Partner at Excedea, as he addressed the subject of the Baltics as an investment target. However, the reasons for are in majority, and the potential problems connected to the reasons against can be tackled once you are aware of them.
