Presidential Priorities The Reform Party, the IRL and the Social Democrats have now declared that they will support the re-election of President Toomas Hendrik Ilves at the upcoming Estonian August 2011 Presidential election.

In a recent speech to the IRL party council, President Ilves pointed out the planned areas of focus for his second term.

- I want to encourage citizen initiatives, tolerance, quality education and the modernization of the country's administrative management, said the President. On an international level, I will stress the fulfillment of Estonia’s EU and NATO obligations.

President Ilves also pushed for his idea to breathe new air into the Estonian diplomatic service by proposing that future ambassadors and top diplomats could be top officials of other services, not just the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

- If re-elected, I will try to change the current system and appoint Estonian ambassadors and top diplomats according to their competence and not according to their position in the strict hierarchy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, concluded the President.

Estonia’s President is elected for a 5 years term and must win 2/3 of the 101 votes in the Parliament.
