image: Being Green is a State of Art… Being Green is a State of Art…

...said Ragnar Unge - CEO Ecolabelling Sweden, at a Business Breakfast organized by the Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Estonia and SCCE on May 6th at Radisson BLU Hotel's Lounge24.

The audience, consisting of more than 40 representatives from Estonia's business community, governmental and non profit organizations agreed. Many of them, having tried to enter the Nordic market with their products or services, had heard the question: „ What kind of environmental certification(s) do you have?"

The official and most well known Ecolabel in the Nordic countries is indeed The Nordic Swan/The Nordic Ecolabel. According to a recent survey the Nordic Ecolabel is recognized by 97 % of the Swedish consumers, 94 % in Norway, 82 % in Denmark, 88 % in Finland and 60 % on Iceland.

There are currently more than 2.000 Nordic Ecolabel licensed products on the market, with 1.200 of them available in Sweden.

In Estonia less than 10 companies have so far been certified for the Nordic Ecolabel. A representative of one of them, Juhan Peedimaa - CEO at Ecoprint, said:

- We applied for the Nordic Ecolabel following a request from a Norwegian customer of ours. Since our company has focused on an environmental friendly production from the beginning, and as we already had the ISO14 001 Certificate, we met even more criteria than The Nordic Ecolabel requires, and therefore we got the Ecolabel in just 2 weeks time. However, during those two weeks we made a few changes in our production process following requirements from The Nordic Ecolabel, and this made our production even more efficient while still keeping it environmental friendly.

- The process for getting The Nordic Ecolabel is not complicated. Currently we have created 65 categories for different product groups to meet the criteria, said Ragnar Unge.

- I totally agree on this, commented Juhan Peedimaa. The documentation for our ISO 14 001 application filled up two big binders, while our documentation and application for The Nordic Ecolabel only consist of ten documents totally.

Having The Nordic Ecolabel is a marketing advantage, especially on the Nordic marketplaces and additionally becoming more and more important on the Estonian home market as well. More information is available at

On behalf of the SCCE Council I would like to thank Ragnar Unge and Juhan Peedimaa for their interesting presentations. My thanks also go to The Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Estonia for a good cooperation in organizing our joint Business Breakfast and to Radisson BLU Hotel for a great Business Breakfast Buffet in Lounge 24.
