From East to North, Ethics, and the Future

Sustainable Growth in the Baltic Sea Region
Sweden's Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt gave a lecture at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga headlined ‘Sustainable Growth in the Baltic Sea Region', in connection with a February 18th official visit to his counterpart in Latvia, Valdis Dombrovskis. Gunnar Ljungdahl, Chairman of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Latvia and Senior Vice President at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, reports.

An economic avant-garde
- Right across the north of Europe, there stretches an alliance of common interests. At a time when much of Europe is in desperate need of fundamental economic reform, it makes sense for us to come together and form an avant-garde delivering jobs and growth, and lead Europe back to prosperity, said UK's Prime Minister David Cameron as he welcomed his Nordic and Baltic colleagues to a summit in London.

Debt protection act - creditors' fears coming true?
On 5 April 2011, the Estonian Debt Restructuring and Debt Protection Act (DPA) (Est: võlgade ümberkujundamise ja võlakaitse seadus) will come into force in spite of the comprehensive resistance it met last year. Kaimo Räppo and Kaido Künnapas at MAQS Law Firm, Tallinn, make an analysis of the new act.

Already called UDleaks in Swedish media, UD - Utrikesdepartementet (The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs) has now released previously secret embassy reports from the years 1989 - 1991 on the Internet. It is mostly reports that were sent to the Ministry in Stockholm from Swedish diplomats in Moscow, Leningrad and the, at that time, provisional Swedish representations in Tallinn and Riga.
