...it is a very small country", said Estonia's Minister of Education
and Research, Jaak Aaviksoo, at the 2011 Investors' Summit,
Friday, October 14th.
Moderated by Andrus Alber, CEO at NASDAQ OMX Tallinn, this year's
Investors' Summit focused on Education versus Business Needs in Estonia.
Jaak Aaviksoo emphasized the necessity for our universities to become
more internationalized, and the need for Estonian students to study abroad.
- The Estonian population can be compared with the number of people living
in Hamburg. Imagine if all students in Hamburg would just study in Hamburg..., said Jaak Aaviksoo.
- Today, 70 % of our students go to gymnasiums and only 30 % to vocational schools. The government's goal is 50/50 and, on a long term basis, 60/40 for vocational schools. As for higher education, 90 % want to study social sciences, while the government is allocating 50 % of the funds to higher education in engineering and nature sciences, continued Jaak Aaviksoo.
