image: No need to sniff on the cork! No need to sniff on the cork!

- There are no reasons whatsoever to pick up this habit of sniffing on the cork that you sometimes see, said Jaanus Vabi, our sommelier and lecturer at the first session of SCCE’s Wine Academy.

- Swirl the wine in the glass instead, expose it to more oxygen and release the bouquet with all its smells and aromas, continued Jaanus.

Our first Wine Academy session took place last Thursday, March 29th, at Restaurant Köleri 2 and focused on wine history, regions and grapes. It all began in Central Asia thousands of years ago and the art of making wine eventually reached ancient Greece and Rome. At the height of the Roman Empire in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, wine was part of the cultures on the European continent.

As for regions and grapes we got a good overview as we tasted this evening’s eight different wines:

White wines - Val D´Oca Pinot Grigio, Marca Trevigiana IGT, Italy; Heinz Schneider, Riesling Classic, Mosel, Germany; SanSilvestro, Chardonnay, DOC Piemonte, Italy; Medaille D´Or, Gewurztraminer, Alsace, France

Red wines - Crane Lake, Cabernet Sauvignon, California, USA; Heinz Schneider, Pinot Noir, Mosel, Germany; Château Tertre de Courban, Merlot, Bordeaux AC, France; Valcanto, Syrah, Almansa, Spain

Don’t miss the upcoming Wine Academy sessions

The next two Wine Academy sessions will focus on French wines and will take place in April and May. Information on date, time and venues will follow soon. Our upcoming sessions during this year will cover the following areas:

1.    Introduction session, 29.03.12
2.   France, part 1

3.   France, part 2

4.   German speaking areas

5.   Spain and Portugal
6.    Italy

7.    New Zealand and Australia

8.    South America

9.    North America

10.  Grand Wine Academy Finale

On behalf of the SCCE Council I would like to thank Jaanus Vabi, Restaurant Köleri 2 and all the SCCE Wine Academy participants for a very interesting and nice evening together.
