The Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg's centenary in 2012 is commemorated both in Sweden and internationally. This Tuesday, October 23rd, the exhibition "To me there's no other choice – Raoul Wallenberg 1912 - 2012" was opened by Ambassador Jan Palmstierna and his Hungarian colleague Ambassador Erik Haupt at Tallinn’s Museum of Occupations.

The exhibition is produced by the Swedish Institute on behalf of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Forum for Living History, and it is currently on tour internationally as well as in Sweden.

Raoul Wallenberg made a unique contribution in the second half of 1944 by saving tens of thousands of Jews in Budapest from the Holocaust. His actions show that one person's courage and ability can make a difference and at Tuesday’s opening ceremony, Brian Palmer from Uppsala University held a lecture titled “Civic Courage: Surviving as an Idealist in an Unforgiving World”. More on Brian Palmer and civic courage is found at

The opening ceremony also included a lecture by the journalist Pekka Erelt from the Estonian newspaper Eesti Ekspress titled “About Raoul Wallenberg's connections to Estonia”. These connections have seldom been heard about before and SCCE’s magazine focus will cover the story in the next issue.

Raoul Wallenberg was captured by the Soviet Union and taken to the notorious Ljubljanka prison in Moscow. No one knows for sure what happened next, nor exactly when he was killed, and the Swedish Government is still demanding an explanation.

Raoul Wallenberg fought against one of the terror dictatorships of his time, and was killed by the other.
