image: Spanish and Portuguese Wines Spanish and Portuguese Wines

- Surrounded by the warm Mediterranean Sea to the south and the cold Atlantic Ocean to the west and north, the vineyards on the Iberian Peninsula experience a wide variety of climate zones and the number of different grapes grown is quite impressive, said our Sommelier Gustaf Hertsius as SCCE’s Wine Academy met for its fifth lecture and tasting session.

Hosted by Schlössle Hotel’s General Manager Tendo Lindvest, we met in the hotel’s Suite Lounge and were welcomed with a glass of Cava, the Spanish sparkling wine made in the traditional method of the French Champagne.

There is indeed a wide selection of Spanish and Portuguese wines produced and this evening we got the opportunity to taste eleven specially selected wines, among them: Bodegas Valdemar - Finca del Marquesado Reserva 2004, Mibal - Mibal 2006, Joan d'Anguera - Planella 2008, JMF - Periquita Red 2007, Vinedos de Nieva - Los Navales Verdejo, and Agusti Torello Mata - Brut Reserva 2007.

As this Wine Academy session took place on March 27th, we also toasted for Estonia’s Lasting Liberty. This special day marked the date when Estonia’s restored independence became longer than the pre-war independency lasting from 1918 to 1940.

The next session in SCCE’s Wine Academy will focus on Italian wines followed by sessions covering wines from New Zealand and Australia, South America, and North America. The Academy will be duly completed with a Grand Wine Academy Finale later on this year. Information on dates, times and venues will follow in good time before each session.

I would like to thank Gustaf Hertsius for his introduction to this session’s selection of wines from the Iberian Peninsula. My thanks also go to Tendo Lindvest and his team at Schlössle Hotel for a very nice Wine Academy set up and a delicious snack buffet. And last but not least, my thanks also go to all Wine Academy students for making this session to yet another nice and cozy evening together.
