image: The Estonian-Swedish Song and Dance Festival 2013 The Estonian-Swedish Song and Dance Festival 2013

With SCCE’s Chairman Karolina Ullman as one of the opening speakers, the second Estonian-Swedish Song and Dance Festival in history took place in Haapsalu, Sunday June 8th.

The first, and latest, Festival took place in 1933, 80 years ago, but Sofia Joons, Chairman of the Estonian-Swedish Culture Council and one of the organizers, told me that we will hopefully not have to wait another 80 years for the next Festival. The aim is now to organize it every fourth year.

Karolina Ullman was also one of the singers in the huge United Choir, including choirs and singers from Estonia, Sweden and Finland, and the Festival could also welcome folk dancers from all three countries.

Following the recent 2013 Royal Sea Voyage to Stockholm with the Schooner Hoppet, which brought a letter to Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf, Ambassador Jan Palmstierna and my predecessor as SCCE’s Ombudsman, Alar Schönberg, read the King’s reply which included his and Queen Silvia’s good and best wishes to all of us.

It was indeed a beautiful Festival Sunday and in the intermission between the Song and Dance performances, the Swedish Embassy and SCCE welcomed invited guests

to our joint Festival Buffet with refreshments.

It takes resources to organize a Festival like this and I am happy to inform that SCCE’s member Õie Tamm at Wigéns Sindi in Pärnu, as well as Wiigi Kohvik in Haapsalu, had

made a major contribution to the Festival. Õie got duly thanked by Sofia Joons in her Festival speech.

I was happy to see and meet so many SCCE members in the big audience and SCCE looks forward to welcome you back again to the next Estonian-Swedish Song and Dance Festival!
