image: Celebrating Estonia’s Independence Day Celebrating Estonia’s Independence Day

This year, Estonia celebrates its 96th Anniversary and hosted by the Finnish Ambassador Aleksi Härkönen, the Finnish, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian Chambers of Commerce in Estonia continued the tradition of celebrating Vabariigi Aastapäev – Estonia’s Independence Day.

It was in 2008, and in connection with Estonia’s 90th Anniversary, that the Swedish Chamber of Commerce and the Swedish Embassy took a joint initiative to celebrate Estonia’s Independence Day. Together with Sweden’s then Ambassador Dag Hartelius, Mart Laar was a key speaker this year and he gave us a very personal and colourful speech covering the past 90 years of Estonia’s history.

In 2009, we went to the Estonian War Museum - General Laidoner Museum in Viimsi Manor where Indrek Tarand took us on a tour through the Estonian War of Independence.

By now, the annual Independence Day celebrations had gained Nordic attention and for two consecutive years, 2010 and 2011, we celebrated the Anniversaries at the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Tallinn together with the other Nordic Chambers of Commerce in Estonia. Marina Kaljurand, nowadays Estonia’s Ambassador to the USA and Mexico, was among our key speakers in 2010 and she put a real Nordic touch to our celebration: “We are Estonians and Nordics with a twist”, concluded Marina Kaljurand her highly appreciated speech.

In 2012 we had a festive Independence Day celebration at Restaurant Mannerheim in Tallinn, and last year - coinciding with Sweden’s Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers - we met again at the Swedish Embassy in Tallinn. “I’m glad to have members of the four Nordic Chambers of Commerce present here today, together with my Nordic and Baltic colleagues and colleagues from the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs”, said Sweden’s then Ambassador Jan Palmstierna.

More on this year’s Independence Day celebration at the Finnish Embassy in Tallinn will follow in the first 2014 issue of focus – the magazine of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Estonia.
