image: Swedish language in Estonia Swedish language in Estonia

Dear Members,

During the last years, the Embassy and Team Sweden has looked into the question on how we can further promote the Swedish language in Estonia. For instance, we have organised a seminar in the Embassy and visited schools, municipalities and companies in both Kuressaare and Pärnu together with the SCCE.

There is already a strong interest for learning the language in the country with over 400 students at upper secondary school level and many students at university level. Furthermore, 14 000 Estonian claim that they speak Swedish.

The Embassy / Team Sweden has started a dialogue with schools, municipalities and universities on what we could do to further strengthen this trend. One key area is promotion. We have noticed that there is a real interest among Swedish companies for recruiting people with knowledge of the Swedish language. However, this information is for the time being only anecdotal.

This is why Team Sweden wish to reach out to the members of the SCCE to get a clearer picture of the added value of knowledge of Swedish when seeking for a job. If our guess that there is a genuine interest proves to be right, we will use the results of this survey when we talk to the future generation of potential Swedish learners in schools, as well as in our dialogue with teachers, school directors and local government representatives. In addition, this process will hopefully also help us to build a stronger network between the Swedish speaking community, universities, schools and companies, for instance through the possibility to offer internships.

Your contribution through participation in this survey is therefore most valuable for our efforts to promote the Swedish language in Estonia.
