image: COVID-19 Vaccine COVID-19 Vaccine

Organized by the Nordic Chamber of Commerce in the Czech Republic and within the cooperation format Swedish Chambers International, Emelie Antoni, AstraZeneca’s Country President in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, addressed questions related to the fight against COVID-19 at a Thursday 26 November webinar.

- There are several pharmaceutical companies around the world engaged in developing vaccines against COVID-19. The work began already in January with the deciphering of the SARS-CoV-2 genome. The first vaccine safety trials in humans started in March, and now some companies, including AstraZeneca, have reached the final stages of testing. The results look promising, commenced Emelie Antoni.

- A major question right now is of course when vaccinations can start and the answer depends on several issues. First, the final stages of the promising testing have to be finalized and the vaccines have to be approved. Furthermore, we should keep in mind that COVID-19 is a global disease and large scale vaccinations will depend on each individual country’s vaccination strategy. Most probably key personnel in the society, like healthcare and rescue personnel and teachers, will be among the first to be vaccinated. A guess is that large scale vaccinations can start during the second quarter next year.

- As I said in the beginning, there are several pharmaceutical companies around the world engaged in developing vaccines at this time and I would like to underline that we are not fighting each other, we are fighting COVID-19. It is a global pandemic and several vaccines will be needed to cover the demand, concluded Emelie Antoni.

On behalf of the SCCE, I would like to thank Emelie Antoni and the Nordic Chamber of Commerce in the Czech Republic for a very interesting webinar.

Sincerely,

Kristiina Brodén – SCCE Ombudsman
