With a classic Swedish Julbonad, SCCE wishes all our members and partners a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy, or more precisely a much, much Happier, New Year 2021.

Julbonader, Christmas wall posters, was a very popular Christmas decoration in Swedish homes during the last century. They typically depicted a Swedish countryside farm during a clear and cold winter night, with the farm’s elf and one or more of the farm’s animals being present. And, of course, lots of snow.

There were several Swedish artists painting these wall decorations. The one depicted above was painted by Curt Nyström, who in this context followed in his mother’s footsteps. She was Jenny Nyström, who together with Erik Forsman and Lars Carlsson became the most frequent artists painting Julbonader.

As the 20th century started to become the 21st century, the popularity of these printed Julbonader had decreased in Sweden. But, it is now reported that they are gaining popularity again.
