100 Years of Diplomatic Relations 100 Years of Diplomatic Relations

“Today is 100 years since Estonia signed diplomatic relations with Denmark, Norway and Sweden. I met the ambassadors of all three countries in Kadriorg to celebrate. Suitable for Nordic countries, rough and beautiful weather“, wrote President Kersti Kaljulaid on her Facebook page, Friday 5 February. On the photo from the Kadriorg meetings, the President is together with Sweden’s Ambassador to Estonia, Mikael Eriksson.

The coordinated decision to recognize the young Republic of Estonia was made simultaneously in Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen on 4 February 1921. The following day, 5 February 1921, the three countries’ letters of recognition were delivered to the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The three letters that Sweden, Denmark and Norway delivered were identical in their message. The Swedish recognition letter was signed by the Swedish Consul Olof Andreas Hedman:

“I have been instructed by His Excellency the Minister for Foreign Affairs to inform your Excellency that His Majesty’s Government, who has much pleasure in seeing Esthonia make its entry amongst the free and sovereign States of Europe, are extremely glad to recognize de jure the Esthonian Republic and its Government.”

Marking the 100 years jubilee, the Friday 5 February program included video congratulations from the Prime Ministers of Sweden, Norway and Denmark, as well as jubilee remarks by the Estonian Prime Minister. Furthermore, the Ambassadors of Sweden, Norway and Denmark had a festive meeting with the Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, followed by President Kersti Kaljulaid welcoming the Ambassadors in Kadriorg to celebrate the 100 years anniversary of the de jure recognition of Estonia.

Commerce, trade and investments have been, and still are vital parts in our countries’ relations and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Estonia wishes all our countries continued future success in our close cooperation.
