image: Gustav Adolfsdagen to be celebrated in Tallinn and Tartu Gustav Adolfsdagen to be celebrated in Tallinn and Tartu


Gustav Adolfsdagen (the Gustav Adolf’s Day) is celebrated on 6 November each year in memory of the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf, who was killed on that date in 1632 at the Battle of Lützen in the Thirty Years' War.

This year, Gustav Adolfsdagen will be traditionally celebrated in the Swedish St. Michael’s Church in Tallinn as well as at the University of Tartu, which was founded as Academia Gustaviana by King Gustav II Adolf in 1632, 385 years ago.


Programs in Tallinn and Tartu on Monday 6 November as follows:



18.00 Musical service and a concert performed by the Orchestra of the Estonian Defence Forces at the Swedish St. Michael’s Church, Rüütli 9, Tallinn.

The service and concert will be followed by Gustav Adolf’s Cake and coffee in the church’s St. Olaf’s Hall.



15.00 Lectures in English at Jakobi 2-114, Tartu:

- From farm house to the palace. 4 success stories from 17th century by Professor Lars Burman, from Uppsala University.

- Designing history through poetry. Menius' epicediums for Gustav Adolf by Kristi Viiding from Under and Tuglas Literature Centre
17.20 Placing flowers at the Johan Skytte and Gustav II Adolf monuments

18.00 Baroque music concert in the Tartu University Assembly Hall: "Queen Kristiina and her times. Musical bridges at the 17th century"
