image: Invitation: democracy area at the Opinion festival and Nordic garden party Invitation: democracy area at the Opinion festival and Nordic garden party The Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Estonia is proud to be one of the supporters of the Opinion Festival being held in Paide on 10 & 11 August and the driving force behind the Democracy area at the event. During Estonia’s centenary year we would like to invite you to take part in a debate regarding the opportunities, freedom and responsibility inherent in participating in democratic processes. Together we will take a look at what sort of opportunities there are and how we can renew our ways of being citizens and providing governance. Are the Nordic countries still an example to Estonia? How can we make the transition from cowboy capitalism to values-based entrepreneurship? Who, and what, is the European Capital of Culture needed for? These are the discussions we will be having, hearing the experiences of both the Nordic countries and Estonia.

You are kindly welcome to the now traditional Nordic garden party, held in the yard of the Roosa maja (Tallinna 33, Paide) from 17:30-20:00 on 10 August.

We look forward to seeing you at the following debates, which will be held in English:

10 August

14:00 Are the Nordic Countries Still a Role Model for Estonians? Discussing this topic will be Kirsti Narinen (Finnish ambassador to Estonia), Taavi Rõivas (MP and former Prime Minister) and Kai Klandorf (CEO, Estonian Non-profit Organisations), moderated by Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Estonia director Christer Haglund.

16:00 From Cowboy Capitalism to Values-based Entrepreneurship. Discussing this topic will be Kati Ihamäki (Director for Sustainable Development, Finnair), Maria Wetterstrand (MP and spokesperson for the Swedish Green Party 2002-2011) and Raul Lättemägi (Owner of AS Advanced Sports Installations Europe), moderated by Annika Arras (Miltton Nordics).

11 August

16:00 European Capital of Culture 2024 – Who for and Why? Discussing this topic will be Suvi Innilä (Turku 2011 Programme Manager, Finland), Ib Christensen (Aarhus 2017, LG Head of Culture Department), Helen Sildna (team member, Narva 2024) and Berk Vaher (team member, Tartu 2024), moderated by Laur Kaunissaare (Tallinn 2011 Programme Coordinator, Theatre No99 playwright).

The Democracy area is one of the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Estonia’s gifts to the country on the occasion of its centenary.

See you at the Opinion Festival!
