Situated some 10 km north of Tallinn, Naissaare was mentioned already during the 11th century as Terra Feminarium - Women's land. Naissaare is an island covered with forests and the natural changes of the landscape is closely linked to human activities.
The island has been inhabited for a millennium by now and the islanders have made their living on fishing and piloting bypassing ships to Tallinn.
Naissaare has been a military island for a long time, having a strategic location for the defence of Tallinn and St. Petersburg. The military constructions notably changed the nature and numerous remainings of fortifications, dating as far back as to the 18th century are still visible on the island.
Nowadays the landscape of Naissaare has diversified and the majority of the ecosystems are quite close to their original natural habitats. For its protection the Naissaare Landscape Reserve was formed in 1995.
SCCE's one-day sailing voyage to Naissaare includes a sightseeing on the island and food & beverages.
